Council Tax Liability During Fixed-Term Tenancy

My tenant left 3 months into a 12-month contract (second term- new contract). I could not relet for 2 months. Am I liable for council tax? The local authority billed me, but I told them it was still under contract; therefore, the tenant's problem until a new tenant occupied.
